Lawyer Bob Reader, of Manhattan, is a candidate for the seat held by Sen. Roger Reitz, a Manhattan Republican who irritated the governor by pushing to retain state funding of the Kansas Arts Commission.

Reader lost a Senate race against Reitz in 2004, but he believes a control-spending and foster-job-growth campaign would reverse that outcome. Reader said he would seek state aid for Kansas State University, where he previously worked to help commercialize technology.
